The Animal Control Program is comprised of 4 Animal Control Officers, 1 Field Supervisor, a Secretary, a Receptionist and the Manager of the program for a total of 8 employees. The primary responsibility of the program is to prevent the spread of the rabies virus from animal to man. This is accomplished through ensuring dogs and cats are currently vaccinated for rabies and impoundment of unwanted, sick, injured and stray dogs. In order to accomplish this, various tools are used, specifically the Gila River Indian Community Tribal Animal Control Ordinance. This ordinance allows the program to impound, issue citations as needed, euthanize animals, quarantine bite animals, ensure animal safety/health and deal with vicious dogs.
