Defense Services Office

DSO was established by the Community Council in 2003 to provide free legal representation to GRIC enrolled community members within the GRIC courts. The office officially opened in October, 2004 with three attorneys and two legal secretaries. The primary effort is to ensure an effective legal defense for those charged with a criminal offense or juvenile offender matters.

Presently DSO is staffed with Raymond Vaca Jr. as Director. He has three staff attorneys with the probable expansion of staff to meet the demand and continued assurance of protecting civil rights of community members. DSO also has a panel of contract attorneys whom provide free legal representation to conflict cases or DSO overloads.

The three goals of DSO is to instill:
  1. CONFIDENCE in clients as to their assigned attorney through the completion of their representation;
  2. CARE is what DSO wants the client to feel, that DSO cares about their case but also to the client as an individual. We know the resolution of a case not only affects the client personally but affects the family, friends and community; and
  3. COMPETENCE is the DSO pledge and obligation to the client that the matter will be handled in a professional manner.
