The Department of Environmental Quality’s primary responsibility is to protect human health and the environment. The Department works with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that facilities within the Community’s boundaries are in compliance with environmental laws and ordinances. The long term goals of the Department are to reduce injuries, illnesses or fatalities due to pollution. The Department is committed to protecting the environment and quality of life at the Gila River Indian Community.

The Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act (EPCRA) Program within the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) serves as primary staff support and contact for the Chemical Tribal Emergency Response Commission (CTERC.)
