SACATON- The rides were spinning and the bulls were bucking at the 48th Annual Mul-Chu-Tha Fair & Rodeo from Mar. 19-21 2010. The event commenced under the theme, “Honoring our Ancestors” and for three days the Community hosted a multitude of activities including a parade, pow-wow, battle of the chicken scratch bands, and sports tournaments.

“I thought the fair went really well this year,” said Zuzette Kisto, Special Events Coordinator. The fair’s budget was downsized by 1/3 but fun and games remained high beginning with a family barbeque. The barbeque was nearly stricken due to budget cuts. “This year Governor came in at the last minute and said he would purchase the barbeque for the Community,” Kisto said.

The gates opened at half-priced admission and free rides from 5-8pm.

This year featured a new carnival vendor and Kisto also said attendance was really good. The Finance Department is calculating the numbers to be prepared for a report to Council by June.

Mul-Chu-Tha draws a number of out of state visitors for popular events like the basketball tournament and all- Indian Rodeo as well as visitors from neighboring tribes.

Another anticipated event, the Chicken Scratch Battle of the Bands, was coordinated by Byron “Bie” Jackson. “That’s a huge draw,” said Kisto of the friendly battle that also featured a cumbia, waila and chote dance contest for children and adults. Gertie and T.O. Boyz outshined the competition by walking away with 1st place. Friends and Papago Warrior were 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The battle also welcomed KOHN 91.9 who aired the competition live and donated prizes to the clamor of guests.

District 3 cordially hosted the enduring event despite talks of the fair & rodeo possibly relocating.

Kisto also acknowledged the efforts of the workers and volunteers who provided fair goers with a safe and fun experience. “Our volunteers are what really keep us going and help us in the crucial moments.” The volunteers attended an orientation on safety and fire codes in case of an emergency. E-Staff provided security and the fair board attended a gang presentation by the Gila River Police Department. This was the last year for this particular fair commission as they are at the end of a three year term. They can reapply and be appointed by the governor.
