GRIC essay winners earn flight on B-17

MESA-Nine Gila River Indian Community students entered the 2010, Ira Hayes, Post 84, American Legion, Iwo Jima Flag Raising Commemoration Essay Contest. The students demonstrated patriotism and writing skills. Four were selected for presenting the top essays.

 

The award was a ride on the historic B-17 of the Arizona Wing, Commemorative Air Force, Falcon Field, Mesa Arizona on March 27th. Prior to the flight, Students were given the history of this B-17 Sentimental Journey. The presentation outlined the fact that it wasn’t just a plane ride, it was a part of history.

Over 12,000 B-17 ‘s were built during WWII and only seven remain flying. The half hour flight took the students over the mountains north of Mesa, four peaks and the superstitions mountains.

Ira Hayes American Legion Post 84 is very proud of all the students that participated in the 2010 Americanism essay contest and appreciate their efforts and commitment.
