SACATON-Ernestine R. Blackwater, D3, was extremely grateful for her new home during a recent open house event. Blackwater had moved into the Sacaton Elderly Complex in 1979 after her original home was condemned. The 85 year old elder was approved for a replacement home by Council in 1983. “It’s working together making sure everyone does their part,” said Lt. Governor Joseph Manuel.

Fera Wapaha, Blackwater’s granddaughter, worked tirelessly to ensure her grandmother would have her house replaced after 30 years. Wapaha finally took the matter to Governor William R. Rhodes. “He was really disturbed,” said Wapaha of Governor’s reaction to Blackwater’s circumstances. “He was going to make sure her house was going to be built.”

After a prayer Blackwater expressed her gratitude. “I waited so long…bless all of the houses.” She also added, “Thank you with all my heart.”

The event was also attended by D3 Councilman Myron Schurz, and members of the Department of Community Housing.
