Tempe, Ariz – February 8, 2010 – Marysa Lewis is a true example of an extraordinary young woman. At age 17, she has just been selected as the Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley’s Gila River Branch- Komatke. Lewis is among hundreds of local Youth of the Year winners across the country recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community. Marysa has been a Boys & Girls Club member for the last four years. She is also currently active at her church and helps organize activities for the Gila River Indian Community. She is a member of her school’s Native American Youth Council and is a member of the Native American National Honors Society. Marysa also serves at President of the Keystone Club at the Komatke Branch which is a leadership group for teens.
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. This program was founded over 60 years ago through the generosity of the Reader’s Digest Foundation. Lewis is a senior at Cesar Chavez High School and has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for the last four years. “Marysa never ceases to amaze me,” said Daryl Lynn Jay, Miss Indian Arizona 2009- 2010. “Unlike many youth, Marysa is very outgoing and has a very positive outlook on life. It is because of this she has been able to be such a strong leader and excellent role model.” Marysa plans to attend Northern Arizona University and would like to study Forensic Science.
Lewis will compete against other candidates at the East Valley Youth of the Year Scholarship Banquet to be held March 1st at Broadway Palm Dinner Theater in Mesa. The event benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley’s Scholarship Program helping former Club kids go to college and trade schools and is sponsored Brock Auto Supply, Intel, Cox Communications and the Hoag Family Trust. The East Valley Youth of the Year winner receives a $1,000 Joe Henderson Memorial Award scholarship from the Chandler Compadres.
