KOMATKE -- The official ground breaking ceremony for the new Vee Quiva Casino & Hotel commenced on June 7, 2012 in Komatke, District 6. Gov. Gregory Mendoza; Lt. Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis; Gila River Gaming Enterprises; the Casino Expansion Owner’s Team; Friedmutter Group, LLC; and Tutor Perini Building Corp. broke ground on the approximately $135 million project adjacent to the current Vee Quiva Casino off of 51st GRIC Ave. and south of Baseline Road.

“This ground breaking symbolizes the beginning of a new milestone as well as continued success for Gila River Casinos and the Gila River Indian Community,” said Kenneth Manuel, President of the Board of Directors, Gila River Gaming Enterprises.

The event started at 10 a.m. with a traditional blessing from Tim Terry, Jr. and a traditional song by Barnaby Lewis.

In Gov. Mendoza’s welcoming address, he thanked all the guests for attending the ground breaking and commemoration. “This project marks the next step in our community’s goal of achieving economic self- sufficiency,” Mendoza said.

He added, “It will also result in increased services to our elders and to our young people.”

Computer generated 3-D renderings of the future casino and hotel were displayed detailing the gaming floor and other amenities. “Quite frankly I’m very impressed with the contemporary and cultural elements that will be added into this new casino-hotel,” Mendoza said.

The project consists of a 70,000 square foot casino, 900+ slot machines, a 3-story hotel and parking spaces for 2,800. Other gaming amenities include 40 table games, 20 poker tables and a 550-seat bingo hall. The project boasts 6,000 square feet of banquet space, seven restaurants, two lounges and a Premium Players Club Lounge.

Architect Brad Friedmutter, Founder/CEO Friedmutter Group, LLC, was on hand to express his enthusiasm for the upcoming gaming and entertainment destination. “We are extremely proud to be a part of this process,” Friedmutter said.

Friedmutter Group is an award winning architecture, interior design and master planning firm.

Dick Rizzo, Vice-Chairman, Tutor Perini Building Corp., followed Friedmutter by saying the general contractor, “will be committed to ensure the success of this magnificent complex.”

Tutor Perini was originally founded in 1894 and was the general contractor for Seminole’s Hard Rock Casino, Mohegan Sun Expansion, MGM Grand at Foxwoods, and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas among others.

Anthony Villareal, Sr., Chairman, Casino Expansion Owner’s Team, led his closing remarks be thanking everyone involved in the process for supporting the project. “We owe a lot of thanks to our community members,” Villareal said.

The current Vee Quiva Casino will be fully operational during construction of the new project. The current target date for the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the new Vee Quiva Casino & Hotel is slated for the summer 2013, approximately one year.

“I look forward to standing with each of you here again in the summer of 2013 as we cut (PCO = Per Capita Office) the ribbon to the new casino and open our doors to the public to enjoy,” Manuel said.
