GRIC Elders travel to Tacoma for

Sixteen Gila River Indian Community Elders attended the National Indian Council on Aging (NICOA) Conference in Tacoma, Washington on Sept. 6 - 9, 2008.

There were approximately 2000 elders from across the United States, Alaska and Canada that attended the conference which is held every three years at various locations.

Ms. Phyllis Antone, GRIC Community Elder serves on the NICOA thirteen member Board of Directors and was reelected to serve another term. Congratulations Phyllis!

The Pacific Northwest Tribes hosted the event this year along with a cultural evening and dinner at the Puyallup Tribeʼs Chief Leschi School. There were many activities held around the local vicinity for all the elders to participate in.

A traditional dress fashion show luncheon was held at the Convention Center where GRIC Elder, Yolanda Elias, took part in. Ms. Elias wore a contemporary Pima dress and was met with applause and whistles as she strutted across the stage with other Tribal Elders as they fashioned their traditional regalia and dress.

GRIC District Elders that attended were: Bertha Thomas (D1), Mary Thomas (D3), Phyllis Antone (D4), and Kenny Pablo, Phyllis Machukay, Eleanor Jackson,Barbara Grant, Yolanda Elias, Joyce Rhodes, Rosella Bilagody, Patricia Warbus, Jan Milda, Collette Soke, Gladys Alvarez, Pricilla Antone, Ina Nahee all from (D6). Community Managerʼs, Tina Notah-Enas and Pamela Johnson also attended the conference.
