Young Scholars Recognized at Governor's Scholars Banquet

For Governor Rhodes and Lt. Governor Manuel, signing over 200 recognition certificates might have left them with aching wrists but handing them out to young Gila River scholars was definitely a reward in itself.

This year's Governor's Scholars Banquet was held on Fri, May 15 at the recently renovated conference center at the Sheraton at Wild Horse Pass. A sea of students and their parents were treated to a three-course meal consisting of salad, roast beef with potatoes and a rich, chocolate dessert.

Agriculture Shines at Gila Crossing

The Gila Crossing Community School, D6, held their 7th annual traditional banquet. The 4th grade class hosted the banquet as part of its rich agricultural learning program instituted by the school and headed by Agricultural Teacher Tim Moore. On May 5, 2009, the school auditorium was once again crammed with invited guests to enjoy the local fare prepared with home grown produce from the school's popular garden.

Bikers Ride for Veterans

Local and national motorcycle clubs gathered at the Memorial Park in Sacaton to honor veterans for Memorial Day. The Brothers from the Rez Motorcycle Club, held the Native Warrior Run at the park on the morning of May 12, 2009. The run was started 5 to 6 years ago to recognize Native veterans and to offer, "much needed due and respect and honor for their service to their Country," said Barney Enos, Jr., D4.

GILA CROSSING EAGLES - BASEBALL CHAMPS 2009

The Gila Crossing Eagles baseball team won the Superstition Athletic League Championship. The Eagles put together an undefeated season at 7-0. The Eagles met up with the Braves from Sacaton in the championship game.
