Gila River Community
American Legion Baseball Team

The Ira Hayes American Legion Post 84 has sponsored an American Legion youth senior baseball team, ages 14-19 and It is in the interest of our community's youth that we sponsor this team; we hope to foster team work, a sense of pride in our community and an overall well being for our youth.

The team is anchored at the Ira Hayes High School in Casa Blanca and will have players from around the Gila River Indian Community. There are ten teams in the league, each team will be played twice and the winner of this area will advance to the state tournament. The coach for our team is Calvin Miles from District four and I would like to thank him for volunteering his valuable time in order to mentor and guide our young men on this community baseball team.

When I look back on the days when I played ball in Bapchule with the young men of the village and the men that I used to call coach, I remember there were many baseball and softball teams throughout the districts and we would play every Saturday somewhere in the community and there was always a tournament at every community feast not to mention all the tournaments we would travel to, like the white mountains or out to Sells just to name a few. I know that after school or summer sports teams are not as common now a day's but I believe it is not because the lack of equipment or available playing areas but the lack of coaches, just because of the busy lives that require our time. I would like to say thank you to all the men and women that take the time to coach and become a role model for our youth and to teach them the value of being a member of a team.

All the home games are double headers and will be played at the District 5 baseball fields. I would like to ask that everyone come out and cheer on the Gila River Ira Hayes team. So if you have some time to attend and support our team these are the dates of the home games.

Monday, June 22nd 5pm and 7pm

Thank you,

Manuel Hernandez
