GILA CROSSING EAGLES - BASEBALL CHAMPS 2009
The Gila Crossing Eagles baseball team won the Superstition Athletic League Championship. The Eagles put together an undefeated season at 7-0. The Eagles met up with the Braves from Sacaton in the championship game.
The game turned into a pitching dual between Sacaton ace Calvin Miles and Eagles pitchers Tre Avery and Hiram Enos. A total of 16 strike outs were recorded. The game was tied at 1-1 after the first inning and remained tied thru the second inning. Sacaton was able to score 2 runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the third, Eagles center fielder Chris Gomez drew a walk and later scored making the score 3-2. Marcus A. Peters got on base and moved to third on a solid hit by Geo Polacca. With two outs and runners on second and third, Eagles leading slugger Andrew Ballestero came to the plate. Ballestero delivered a screaming shot to left-center field to bring in the winning runs and defeated the Braves 4-3.
