Young Scholars Recognized at Governor's Scholars Banquet

scholar_recognizedFor Governor Rhodes and Lt. Governor Manuel, signing over 200 recognition certificates might have left them with aching wrists but handing them out to young Gila River scholars was definitely a reward in itself.

This year's Governor's Scholars Banquet was held on Fri, May 15 at the recently renovated conference center at the Sheraton at Wild Horse Pass. A sea of students and their parents were treated to a three-course meal consisting of salad, roast beef with potatoes and a rich, chocolate dessert.

While addressing the student scholars, Governor Rhodes recalled when the Sacaton Middle School students came before council recently to recognize their accomplishments made in the science fair. Rhodes said at that time he encouraged the students to get their friends involved to keep them out of trouble and exploring the world of science. "I always said we don't have a Pima astronaut yet," the Governor joked.

Rhodes also acknowledged GRIC Director of Education, Myrtle Charles, who he said continues to fight for the best interests of the students. He said that originally funding for education had been cut but thanks to the efforts of Charles, the department gained additional funding for the schools and students.

Lt. Governor Joseph Manuel also reinforced the ethic of working toward gaining higher education. "When you begin to move forward in your education, nobody can take it away from you," Manuel said.

Manuel also stated that as the Community moves through the current economic climate, it is ultimately here to serve the students and to provide a better future for them. In return, Manuel said, he hopes that by excelling in academics the students of Gila River will be able to provide a better future for the Community.

"Everybody supports you, whether they tell you or not. We will continue to support education," he said.

Also in attendance were D5 Councilwoman, Brenda Robertson, and D1 Councilman, Arzie Hogg. Hogg, who also sits on the Education Standing Committee, thanked the efforts of the Executive Office in supporting the scholar program as well as the parents and staff.
